Research Interests:

Research Interests: Our research is focused on leveraging the unique optical, mechanical, and electrical properties of low-dimensional (e.g., nanowires, nanorods, nanoparticles) semiconductor materials to develop novel sensing, diagnostic, imaging, and spectroscopic platforms. Applications of such devices include biomolecular screening, high-throughput single molecule detection, biomedical diagnostics, stand-off detection, gas sensors, and sub-cellular imaging. In addition, we are interested in developing nanostructured materials such as semiconductors, polymers, and metals for use in energy conversion devices such as photovoltaics, piezoelectrics, and thermoelectrics.
Currently we have three focus areas: (1) development of evanescent field sensors based on subwavelength optical waveguides for rapid single molecular detection and biodiagnostics; (2) fabrication of new analytical instrumentation for combined optical and mechanical studies of complex biological machineries; and (3) fabrication and development of hybrid piezoelectric/polymer materials for energy scavenging and sensing devices.
