The NanoEngineering Program is currently a selective major. Requirements for admission as a NANO major or into NANO courses are the same for transfer students as they are for continuing students (see Admission to the Jacobs School of Engineering). Accordingly, when planning their program, transfer students should be mindful of lower-division course requirements and pre-requisites, as well as courses meeting college requirements.
The following courses are strongly recommended for all NanoEngineering transfer students for success and to move forward in the major courses.
- Math 20A - Calculus I—for Science and Engineering
- Math 20B - Calculus II—for Science and Engineering
- Math 20C - Calculus and Analytic Geometry
- Math 20D - Differential Equations
- Math 20E - Vector Calculus or Math 20E Requirement Fulfillment Exam administered through the Math Department
- Math 18 - Linear Algebra (formerly Math 20F)
- Phys 2A-B-C-D - Complete calculus-based physics series
- Chem 6A-B-C+7L - General Chemistry with lab experience
- Bild 1 - The Cell
Community college equivalent courses can be found at assist.org. Students who have taken equivalent courses elsewhere may request to have transfer credit apply toward the department’s major requirements. To receive transfer credit, complete a Student Petition form. For mathematics, chemistry, and physics, the respective department determines transfer equivalencies.
Every course (except NANO 4 and NANO 199) must be taken for a letter grade.
All NANO core courses are taught only once per year and are scheduled to be consistent with the curriculum shown below.
The courses listed here other than NANO are under the control of other departments. They may not be offered in the quarter shown here. Each student is responsible for determining the prerequisites, when the courses are to be offered, and making a schedule of taking the courses that fit into his or her own graduation plan.

CURRICULUM for NANO TRANSFER STUDENTS
All courses are 4-units unless stated below
1NANO 4:This course should be taken in the first Fall Quarter at UC San Diego. Students will not graduate without taking NANO 4.
2NANO15:This course will be offered in the Fall and may be offered in the Winter Quarters. If you cannot register forNANO15 in the Fall, you may enroll in MAE 8 in Winter or Spring Quarters, if it is being offered.
3General Education Requirements (various units):This requirement is intended to fulfill the general education requirements(G.E.) from respective colleges. The forty-eight units are shown for Warren College students as an example to fulfill the general education requirements. Students in other colleges need to adjust the plan to match their own college requirements.
4NanoEngineeringElectives (twenty units):This requirement must be chosen from among the upper-division NANO courses (NANO 100 - 199) offered by the department. Students must petition to use other upper division courses, such as CENG, BENG, MAE, ECE, to fulfill the NanoEngineering Electives requirements.
