2019 AIChE Annual Meeting - Social and Networking Event

On November 10th, 2019 the Department of NanoEngineering and Chemical Engineering Program hosted a social and networking reception at this year's American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. Professors Zheng Chen, Liangfang Zhang, Nisarg Shah and Jinhye Bae were in attendance to share news about our Department and its successes.

2019 UC San Diego Fall Showcase

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, UC San Diego invited prospective students and their parents to explore the campus during their 2019 Fall Showcase. Professor Stephen Horvath and Undergraduate Student Advisor, Karla Vega from the Department of NanoEngineering were on-hand to speak with students about the NanoEngineering and Chemical Engineering majors.

Fall 2018 Graduate Student Orientation

The Department of NanoEngineering held its annual Graduate Student Orientation on Friday, September 21 - 22, 2018.  This year we welcomed 51 new students to our Masters and PhD programs. The orientation included on-campus presentations from faculty and staff, discussion with student services and organizations, a taco luncheon on the patio, and a BBQ at the beach. Congratulations to the new Graduate and PhD students!

NanoEngineering Undergraduate Open House

We held our first annual Undergraduate Open House on Friday, September 14th, 2018 where we welcomed students from various high schools in San Diego. Faculty and staff were on-hand to present program information and showcase some chemical engineering experiments.  Graduate students were also available to discuss their lab research through posters. We thank the high school kids and their advisors for coming and hope to see them and more students next year!

Jan Talbot Retirement Party

The Department of NanoEngineering would like to offer a warm congratulations to Chemical Engineering professor and Program Director, Jan Talbot on her retirement. For her 34 years of service and her many contributions that have cultivated young engineers, we thank you. We had the pleasure of celebrating Dr. Jan Talbot at her retirement party in July of 2018.

2018 Chemical Engineering Final Poster Presentations

Chemical Engineering students in CENG 124B, their final course of the program, presented their work at the Chemical Engineering Final Poster Presentation in June, 2018. Each student group had the opportunity to discuss their projects with Dr. Talbot, Dr. Russ, and course TAs.  Each poster was judged and three student groups were awarded a certificate for Best Poster. Congratulations to the winners and all the students on this huge accomplishment.

2018 Department of NanoEngineering Graduate Recruitment Weekend

From Thursday, February 15 - Saturday, February 17, 2018, the NanoEngineering Department welcomed over 30 students to this year's Graduate Recruitment Weekend.  Students attended tours, program information sessions, and met with the department Chair and faculty members.  The weekend ended with a barbeque celebration at La Jolla Shores.  The Department of NanoEngineering would like to thank each student for attending.

2018 Zable Endowed Chair Celebration

NanoEngineering professor, Shirley Meng, was appointed the inaugural holder of the Zable Endowed Chair in Energy Technologies in the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.  The honor was celebrated at UC San Diego on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 where Dr. Meng also presented her work on The Future of Sustainable Power and Energy.  Congratulations to Dr. Shirley Meng.

2017 Dool Elementary STEM Visit

Professor Vazquez-Mena was invited to Dool Elementary in Calexico, CA by the school counselor, Mr. Sammy Gutierrez, and by the Student Service Coordinator of Calexico, Mrs. Hortencia Armendariz, to promote science and engineering to their students. On one of the visits, Professor Vazquez Mena explored science and engineering at the nanoscale. To help give the students perspective of the nanoscale, he coordinated an imaginary trip for the kids to explore the macro scale human organs and nanoscale proteins and DNA. They even looked at the smallest structures of atoms and electrons. On June 6th, Professor Vazquez Mena organized experiments on electrostatics, liquids and chemical reactions for fourth and sixth graders. Students were motivated and engaged on both visits, and we are thankful Professor Vazquez Mena is working to engage our youth in science and engineering.

This is the beginning of an amazing collaboration with the NanoEngineering Department. Thank you, Professor Vazquez Mena, for your contribution!

Congratulations to our Chemical Engineering Class of 2017!

On Tuesday, June 6th, 2017, our Chemical Engineering Senior Class showcased their final design projects in a poster session.  The past 2 quarters, the senior class has worked in teams to complete a chemical process design project report. This year our largest class of 60 teams had the chance to work with local San Diego companies in a variety of projects such as looking at how to improve processes for protein production for alga,  designing a waste heat system for more energy efficient solar panels, and producing a system to assist washing lettuce for an organic farm.

At the end of the session, we also recognized Mohammad Ayman Alkhadra who was chosen to receive the Huppert Memorial Outstanding Senior in Chemical Engineering Award. This award is for overall outstanding academic achievement in chemical engineering. In addition, 3 teams were recognized as for outstanding posters.
