Materials and Architectures to Long-Life Electrochemical Energy Storage

Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E)

Abstract:
Rechargeable batteries can enable both vehicle electrification and grid storage but still face challenges in cost and life. The presentation first describes our work on aging mechanism diagnosis of lithium-ion batteries as well as designs of nanostructured materials and device architectures to enable long life. The presentation then discusses how my research experience helps shape the vision of an ARPA-E program. The RANGE program develops inherently robust batteries, which can be designed to absorb vehicle crash energy rather than being a safety hazard. The program has stimulated innovations in battery chemistries and architectures not traditionally considered for vehicle use. We conclude by pointing out potential research opportunities in energy storage technologies
Biosketch:
Dr. Ping Liu serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), where he initiated the RANGE and the DELTA programs. RANGE develops innovative energy storage solutions for electric vehicles, while DELTA supports localized heating and cooling solutions to reduce building energy consumption. Dr. Liu was previously Manager of Energy Technology at HRL Laboratories. Prior to HRL, Dr. Liu was a research staff with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His research interests include electrochemical energy conversion and storage, sensors, actuators, and materials chemistry. Dr. Liu received his PhD in Chemistry from Fudan University in China.
